It has been more than five years since Paradisic went live. 5 years is an eternity in the tech world, and WordPress (the software that powers this website) has come a long way since. The original paradisic.org site ran in a Virtual Machine (VM) on a Dell server in a rack rented from a data center. It was relatively reliable but required occasional maintenance commonly associated with Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) for those familiar with Information Technology (IT) terminologies.
- Cost of hardware (sunk cost)
- Monthly cost of data center space and bandwidth
- Occasional maintenance
- Manual Software updates
Fast forward five years. WordPress rules the world (almost) and the Software as a Service (SaaS) model has become very reliable and affordable. The value proposition is pretty convincing:
- Equipment Cost (Zero, nada, zilch!)
- Minimal hosting cost
- No maintenance cost
- Automatic software update
So, guess what? We are moving.
As I am sitting here at the hospital next to my father’s bed getting the site ready for the move, it dawned on me that the original site went live shortly before my dad’s hospital stay in 2011. Five years later and his body needed an overhaul just like the website. The timing is quite coincidental. Or is it?
